But on top of that, if you don't start shooting fast and work out any bugs in your system, the first light of dawn shows up an hour before sunrise and is just enough to ruin the black of night so you can't see the milkyway anymore. (although I was exhausted from 4 days of intense hiking - I got these pix on my last night there!)Īlso the milkyway rises shortly before dawn, so you can't see it in the 'normal' evening hours anyway. The moon was out much of the night and it cast too much light on the sky to fully appreciate all the stars So I had to be up in the wee hours of the morning (3am) to wait for the moon to set. I was sure to purchase a cable release for my camera otherwise you can't do it right my tripod is 25+ years old and weak but I decided to do without buying a new tripod (that is on my wish-list however). I remember in past years just being so awe struck at seeing this glow in the sky and to realize that that is our galaxy and I could see it with my very own eyes! So, on this trip I was determined to get photos. Personally, of all the wonders to observe in the night sky, the milky way has got to be the coolest of them all. It is all so breath-taking and awe-inspiring.) As I awake from time to time, it is amazing to watch the progress of the constellations - their positions change as they rotate around the sky. I even saw many shooting stars (meteors) as well as a number of orbiting satellites! (I’ll tell you this: I never use a tent, so I sleep looking up at the stars. One of my favorite things about this area is to stargaze and to see the incredible night sky with the zillions of stars. It is one of the best observatories in Mexico and scientists prefer to carry out their astronomy research there, because: A) the location is remote and extremely unpopulated – therefore the area is free from light pollution from city light B) the mountains are so high that they reach well above dust and air pollutants which occur at lower levels and C) the weather is often perfect with clear, cloudless skies. In the Sierra San Pedro Martir National Park (El Parque Nacional Sierra de San Pedro Martir) in Baja California, Mexico, the night sky is so spectacular that they even built a national observatory here. I took several shots and this was about the best. One of them was to get a good photo of the milky way. The over-riding objective of my trip -my #1 goal, was to make it to the 10,000+ foot (3000+ meter) summit of Picacho Del Diablo. It appears brightest near Saggittarius because that is the bulge at the galatic center. So the hazy white glow or band we see as the Milky Way is actually the disk of the galaxy looking right through the thickness of the galatic plane. The galaxy is basically, something like our solar system, a rotating disk with some 300 billion stars and a bulge at the center. In my photo here you can see the central core part of the Galaxy near the constellation Sagittarius. But it also can mean the Galaxy itself as in The 'Milky Way Galaxy'. The term 'Milky Way' can refer to the pale band of light formed by the plane of the galaxy, as seen in the night sky under only the darkest and clearest conditions.
